The purpose of this organization, operating under the auspices of the Houston Symphony society, is to promote quality music education and enrichment programs for area students and to promote music appreciation in the Bay Area through an affiliation with the Houston Symphony and other resources.
APOLLO CHAMBER PLAYERS
BAHSL’s September meeting program will feature the Apollo Chamber Players performing ‘Soundscapes of Europe’ . This program
consists of eclectic music spanning the European Continent. Along with Debussy’s shimmering String Quartet in G Minor, Apollo
will present a set of melodies from Spain, Germany and Greece. This group of youthful musicians creatively and passionately explores
the intersection of classical and folk music.
Violinist and Artistic Director, Matthew Detrick, who received a Master’s Degree of Music from Rice University, enjoys an
active performing and teaching career. In addition to his duties as Artistic Director of Apollo, he is frequent concertmaster and princi-
pal second of the Symphony of Southeast Texas, in Beaumont, and he performs regularly with the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra,
Ars Lyrica, Opera in the Heights, and other Houston-based ensembles. Outside of Houston, Matt has performed with the Charleston
Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, Fl. He has performed with the
AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria and the Zepher Ensemble tours in Japan and Panama. Summer participation includes the
Pine Mountain Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the National Orchestral Institute, and Spoleto Festival USA.
Matthew was the winner of the 2002 Houston Symphony Concerto Competition. His primary teachers include Kenneth Goldsmith, the
late Raphael Fliegel, and Collette Wichert.
Timothy Peters began his violin studies at the age of four at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City, Iowa. After completing his
studies with Doris Preucil, he received his Bachelor of Music Degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and his Masters of Music
Degree at Rice University, where he was a student of and teaching assistant to Kenneth Goldsmith.
As a member of the Brutini String Quartet, Degas Quartet, and Young Eight Octet, Timothy has performed in Carnegie Hall, the Li-
brary of Congress, the Kimmel Center, and on the Chicago, Raleigh, and Charlotte Chamber Music Series. He made his official New
York Recital debut in 2000 on the prestigious Schneider Concert Series In Tishman Hall, and has worked closely with such musicians
as Isaac Stern, Ida Kavafian, Wu Han, and members of the Orion, Cleveland, Juilliard, Tokyo, and Guarneri String Quartets.
Timothy has an equal passion for orchestral playing, and has performed with the Houston, San Diego, Charleston, and San Antonio
Symphonies, as well as the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Ballet, the Sarasota Opera, and the Spoleto (USA) and Breckenridge
Festival Orchestras. Between 2001 and 2004, Timothy spent three summers as Concertmaster of the National Orchestral Institute, and
his performance of Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben was highly acclaimed by the Washington Post.
Violist Matthew Carrington is a dynamic orchestral performer and chamber musician. Matthew has worked with members of the
Ives and Alexander Quartets as well as Janos Starker, Ik-Hwan Bae and Pamela Frank. Before joining the Apollo Chamber Players, he
performed as a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic, New World Symphony, and the Evansville Philharmonic. Matthew received
his bachelor's degree from U.C. Santa Cruz where he was a member of the resident string quartet program. He also holds a Master and
Performer Diploma from Indiana University where he studied with Mimi Zweig and Atar Arad
Cellist Matthew Dudzik began his musical training at the age of nine under the guidance of Minnesota Orchestra cellist Sachiya Iso-
mura whom he studied with until college. He continued his education at Southern Methodist University where he was a student of
internationally renowned soloist Ko Iwasaki. Matthew came to Houston in 2001 to pursue further studies with Norman Fischer at the
Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and has remained here since graduating in 2004. He has performed throughout Houston
with a variety of organizations including: The Houston Grand Opera, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Zephyr Ensemble, Theater Un-
der the Stars and the Houston Bach Society. During the summer months from 2002-2005, he performed throughout Japan at the Pa-
cific Music Festival where he appeared with members of the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic in chamber music recitals
as well as in the PMF Symphony Orchestra.
Houston Symphony League Bay Area (HSLBA)  2011‐2012   President’s Message  Welcome to the 2011‐2012 HSLBA season!  Your board has been busy all summer preparing for a successful year.  We hope that you participate to the fullest in all of our endeavors to help promote quality music education and enrichment programs for area students and to promote music appre‐ciation in the Bay Area through an affiliation with the Houston Symphony and other resources.  We will continue to meet at Gloria Dei on the second Wednesday of each month September through November and January through May.  The month of February will be an evening meeting.  You will have the opportunity to enjoy wonderful musical programs performed by outstanding, tal‐ented musicians.  Your dues support the operations of HSLBA and we look forward to seeing you and your friends at these programs.  In addition, we will have a special event on October 25th jointly planned with the Museum Guild that will bring together musical entertainment, food and fellowship with other members of our community.    Mark your calendars for our big spring event!  A Day by the Bay Home Tour will be held March 24‐25th.   The preview party will be held Friday, March 23th.  This is HSLBA’s only fund raiser for our education programs in the Clear Creek Independent School District.  We are now providing music education programs for 26 elementary schools in grades 1‐5.  You have the opportunity to volun‐teer as puppeteers or introducing music ensembles to the children and in assisting with the success of the home tour.  Other volunteer opportunities are found in singing with the Notables, helping with the Houston Symphony as greeters at Jones Hall, assisting with the “Children Petting Zoo” and with the Concerto and Ima Hogg Competitions.    Please join us in these activities, meeting your fellow members and assisting us in bringing music education and appreciation to our students and community.  Thank you for your support and I look forward to working with you.   Glenda Toole President, HSLBA  Photo courtesy of J Pamela Photography Maestro, the Magnificent Training

Plan to stay immediately following the September 14 general meeting for training and orientation for the very popular puppet show which HSLBA provides for every first grade class in the 26 elementary schools in CCISD. Lunch will be provided and an opportunity to set up the stage and handle the puppets. No special skill is needed - just a willingness to unleash a little drama! A script is provided for each character. When the schedule is finalized, you will have the opportunity to select dates and schools. A large pool of trained puppeteers means fewer "gigs" for each person. It is a fun and entertaining way to introduce children to the families of instruments. Save the dates!! Please reserve the weekend of March 24-25, 2012 for our fabulous home tour. Yes, we're ready to get planning and involve members and guests. Thanks to Joan Wade and Natalie Ong, we have five houses in Nassau Bay. One of the houses is on the fresh water lake, and the other four are on the bay. The pretour party, March 23, will be in one of the homes. All are beautifully decorated, and some have been completely redone since Ike. On the third of July, fifty four people took an uneventful bus ride to the Cynthia Woods Pavilion in the Woodlands. During the ride all enjoyed a box supper provided by La Madeleine Restaurant along with beverages. While at the Woodlands all were treated to a wonderful Patriotic Concert performed by the Houston Symphony. There was a good selection of music and you came from there being proud to be an American. The Houston Symphony’s Opening Night Gala is always a festive opportunity to celebrate the new season, while enjoying a memorable evening of music, dinner and dancing – and this year’s event will be no exception! The Opening Night Gala on September 10, 2011 will celebrate something truly special – an Ode to Joy! Maestro Hans Graf will lead our orchestra, chorus and soloists through Beethoven’s awe-inspiring Symphony No. 9. Following the magnificent con-cert in Jones Hall heralding the start of a magical season at the Symphony, the festivities will continue at The Corin-thian, where party-goers will enjoy a triumphal celebration of music, friendship and joy! Our celebration will include dining on a sumptuous feast by the incomparable Jackson & Company and dancing to the sounds of the Richard Brown Orchestra. Our Honorees for this evening are the beloved Helen and Jim Shaffer. As most of you know, Helen and Jim have lent their unwavering philanthropic and volunteer support to countless arts organizations in Houston – but their ongoing dedication to the Houston Symphony holds tremendous significance for those of us who have watched their leadership efforts on behalf of the Symphony for almost thirty years. It's time for the 2011-12 Shell Master Series of six concerts at Jones Hall. Come with us -- ride the
bus! Enjoy the view of the Houston skyline on a carefree bus ride. You will not have to watch the road, pay
gas prices and parking fees, and then, hike through the parking lot and climb the stairs to Jones Hall.
HSLBA's concert bus picks us up at Bay Area Park & Ride at 1 PM on concert afternoons, drops us off at
Jones Hall front door, and picks us up after the concert. We arrive in time for an expert and fascinating de-
scription of the concert music and composer, or to enjoy lunch with friends on The Mezzanine.

Sunday afternoon Shell Master Series at Jones Hall is a total of six (6) concerts for the 2011-2012 year. The
bus ride for all six concerts is $75. A phone call to Jeff Gilmer of Houston Symphony Group Sales, 713-
224-7575, and your credit card number will get you a concert seat in the right orchestra for
$234. HSLBA is our password for this great deal! If you prefer to buy individual tickets before or on the

half-way to filling it. Blanche believes that the Houston Symphony bus to the Sunday afternoon concerts is HSLBA's
