NWRA extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Diana (Di) Oakes Conger who died Wednesday 25 July 2012. Di was the director of Last Chance Wildlife Center in Thurmont, Maryland and served the wildlife rehabilitation community on a local, state, national, and international level. Di was a member of the NWRA Board of Directors and a Vice President. Over her many years on the board, Di contributed to NWRA and the community as chairperson for several committees.

3. Injectable Meloxicam Shortage
University Laboratory Animal Resources (Ohio State University) is reporting an eminent shortage of injectable meloxicam with manufacturers indicating no further supply available until the end of 2012. Meloxicam in tablet form is not reported in short supply for the future. Check with your veterinarian for further information and other products he/she may recommend.
4. Canada: Canine Distemper in Raccoons
During the month of June raccoons sick with canine distemper have been appearing in Winnipeg and Headingley, including around the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, and Corydon Avenue area. Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the University of Texas Health Science Center found a correlation between human infection with West Nile virus and subsequent kidney disease. 6. Rabies Confirmed in Deer

7. Over 500 Penguin Deaths in Brazil
Magellanic penguins migrate to southern Brazil from Patagonia every year during the southern winter. Brazilian biologists are investigating the deaths of more than 500 penguins found washed up on the beaches of Rio Grande do Sul state and will perform necropsies to try and determine cause of death. While similar penguin deaths have occurred in the past, those animals were starving and in poor health. The recent dead penguins appear to be fat and healthy. 8. CWD Found in Iowa Deer
The first report of chronic wasting disease in an Iowa deer has been confirmed. The deer was located on a hunting preserve in Davis County. More information: http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/blogs/163226856.html.
9. West Coast Brown Pelicans Contaminated with Fish Oil
Although a number of birds have died, over 70 young brown pelicans are now in care and at least 50 more have been identified in need of assistance along the North Coast. Part of the problem is fish waste bins left open and draining at the harbor’s fish cleaning station and individuals purposefully feeding the pelicans material from the bins.
